Language requirements

Applicants must demonstrate sufficient language proficiency for their intended program of study.

Applicants for programs taught in French

You are exempt from the French language certificate if:

  • you hold a French baccalaureate (issued by the French Ministry of Education), or are a student from bilingual French sections appearing on a list drawn up jointly by the French Ministries of National Education and Foreign Affairs and International Development;
  • you hold a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in French language and culture;
  • you are a national of an officially French-speaking country: Benin, Burkina Faso, Congo, Ivory Coast, Gabon, Guinea Conakry, Mali, Monaco, Niger, Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal, Togo;
  • you hold a University Diploma in French Studies (DUEF) level B2, C1 or C2.

Arabic is the only official language of Algeria, Morocco, Lebanon, and Tunisia; French is only a language with special status in these countries. Candidates from these four countries are therefore required to provide proof of their French language proficiency.

In order to be exempt from the TCF, DELF or DALF, citizens of multilingual countries where French is one of the official languages (Belgium, Burundi, Cameroon, Canada, Central African Republic, Comoros, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Haiti, Luxembourg, Madagascar, Rwanda, Seychelles, Switzerland, Chad, Vanuatu) must be able to prove that they have completed all of their secondary education in a French-speaking institution.

Candidates for courses taught in English

  • All candidates applying for initial enrollment in a master's program taught in English at the University of Pau and Pays de l'Adour must provide proof of sufficient English language proficiency.
  • For more information, see FAQ No. 9.
